Hip-Hop dance refers to different styles of dancing primarily danced to hip-hop music and evolving from the hip-hop culture. There are five pillars of hip-hop culture including Breaking, MCing, DJing and Graffiti Writing. The early signs of hip-hop started with the music which came from the African Americans New Yorkers block parties in the Bronx during the 1970s. The successful hip-hop music story starts from the Rappers - They started out as simple street punks, mostly gang members, fighting over territory, power and of course – who makes the best music! From street corners to Back Alleys these Rappers paved their way to Fame.
Hip-Hop dancing has over 25 years of history and has a wide range of styles which includes Breaking, Locking, Popping and Krumping! It is a dance style that originated from the streets and clubs rather than in the dance studios. Breaking, Locking and Popping were developed in the 1970s by the black and Latino Americans. Krumping then followed in the 1990s from American communities in Los Angeles.
Hip-Hop is often separated from other forms of dancing because of its improvisational nature. Hip-Hop dancers frequently engage in battles – one on one dance competitions. The spread of hip-hop culture has lead to the birth of new hip-hop dance moves and dance styles. Today’s hip-hop style is practiced in both studios and outdoor spaces. To some it has become a way of life and part of their social culture, to others a modern way to be physically challenged, a way for professional dancers to make a living or simply just a hobby. Either way hip-hop is a form of modern entertainment for performers and the audience to appreciate and enjoy.
