Isadora Duncun, Loie Fuller and Ruth St Denis are regarded as the founders of contemporary dance. They were three artistic women who were inspired by nature and culture and performed in the early part of the 20th century.
There are various different techniques in contemporary dance. Martha Grahame, Merce Cunningham and Limon’s techniques are taught at the main dance schools in Britain.
Contemporary classes are very creative. Learners spend half of a lesson working on technical exercises to build strength, flexibility, contraction and release. The second half of the lesson is dedicated to choreography, learning repertoire building on motifs, and creating own work through a mixture of games and exercises.
