Ballet is the foundation of many modern dance styles.
In the 16th century in Italy ballettis were performed by actors (balletti means figured dance). By the late 16th centaury early 17th century there are records from the French ballet ‘Orchesographic’ that shows that ‘turn out’ had been introduced and the five feet positions were described. ‘Orchesographic’ would not have been performed by dancers but by members of the French Court. Even though many countries choreographed their own ballets it is said that France really developed classical ballet as we know it today. Louis the XIV was famous for his dancing he once played Apollo the Sun King.
Swan lake and Sleeping Beauty are traditional ballets regularly performed at The New Theatre Oxford by companies such as RBS and English National Ballet. However, in order to see how ballet has progressed we would recommend travelling to Sadler's Wells in London to see Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake.
